All-Ukrainian project "LIFE WINDOWS" (Odesa, Ukraine)
All-Ukrainian project "LIFE WINDOWS" (Odesa, Ukraine)
LIFE WINDOW is a place where a mother (and not only) can leave her child secretly and without prosecution, after which the child is taken care of by the social services and the state! Almost all windows of life are in medical centers with qualified specialists (most often maternity clinics).
THE PROJECT'S MISSION is to save the lives of those children whose mothers have made the terrible decision to get rid of their child... Unfortunately, the statistics of infanticide by their mothers is not fiction and has shocking figures. It fluctuates according to the level of income in the country, the development of the population in a particular region and other factors. However, the police say this kind of crime is common to many countries in the world.
Most often such cases occur in rural areas, but not infrequently in cities as well. The dead bodies of newborn babies are found in basements, in landfills, dumped in rubbish bins, buried in gardens and even in cesspools... We can only guess what motives motivated their mothers in this or that case, but it remains a fact...
It is in order to prevent such crimes that a number of countries have started installing LIFE WINDOWS! They enable mothers to make the right choice and leave their child there without any consequences for themselves, keeping them alive and saving themselves, among other things. It's hard to even imagine, after a while, how a mother who took her child's life will live...
Standing next to the box, the mother may change her mind, and even after she opens the window and puts the child there, she still has 30 seconds to a minute to change her mind and take the child back! We do everything we can to make sure that the child stays with his mother, but if there is no way back, then let the child, thanks to that window, stay alive!
THE PROJECT HISTORY in Odesa is based on the desire to save little lives! Together with people who support me, we were able to put windows of life in all maternity hospitals in Odesa and to reconstruct one window installed before us, without any special options...
It is important to understand that the installation of the LIFE WINDOWS is not the final goal of the project, as the installation itself is in no way a factor in solving the problem. Not everyone who has made the terrible decision (to kill) is aware that such a project exists... Therefore, our second task after installing the windows is to inform (thanks to volunteers, community leaders, the media...) those who might be on the receiving end of the terrible decision!
OUR TECHNICAL PARTICIPATIONis that the social platform "Good Deed", thanks to people who care, carries out the refurbishment of a selected place in a medical institution. By installing the LIFE WINDOW (a special box), a ramp, an alarm system, and signage. Since we remodel the window without interfering with the load-bearing structure of the facility, it does not require any additional permits from the architecture, and hanging signage is not considered advertising and also does not require approval! And if you have decided to support us and install such a window in your city, just contact us!
NATIONAL FORMAT OF THE PROJECT
Its emergence was due to the fact that by installing windows of life in Odesa and discovering more and more data, it was decided not to stop in Odesa, but to continue the project in other cities! That's how the LIFE WINDOW appeared in the city of Razdelnaya (Odesa region). And we hope that thanks to your support, we can put such life-saving spaces in other cities in the Odesa region. And maybe in other cities in Ukraine.
Below we have collected information on which cities in Ukraine have windows of life and how many babies have been saved thanks to them! The information provided below has been collected from the staff of medical institutions. It is not statistically official and in reality it is most likely significantly higher than all of the above figures.
At this point we can say that according to the preliminary data, in 19 LIFE WINDOWS in our country (collected in 2019) more than 30 CHILDREN'S LIVES have been SAVED!
Of course, one could say that these children could have been brought in anyway. No! It is only if the child is born in a maternity home and the mother decides to give it up that it will be put in the care of the state!
And here are children, which are brought into the LIFE WINDOWS, these are children, information on which is initially absent, because often, they were born outside the places of official registration of birth! Therefore, the death of such a baby will not be registered, and the murderer will most likely not answer in court for his/her crime! So every baby brought to the window of life could be dead... And although we have written these words with a shudder, and you may read them that way, we can say one thing - let there be these windows! And may they never be needed, but if they are, let's not think about what could have been, because the most important thing is done, another life saved!
This is why the project is so important, where we give parents the opportunity to think for themselves, to find the window of life in their neighbourhood, to keep their child alive!
WE HOPE AND BELIEVE that the world is getting better, but alas, we know that these windows are still needed. So together with you, we can save many children's, and possibly even adults' lives. Because not everyone will be able to go on living a normal life after killing their child!

HOW TO HELP TO FOLLOW THIS PROJECT
Each of our projects is made possible thanks to caring people and if you're ready to help us further develop this project, below we tell you how to do it!
The support that we would welcome in this project is divided into several types:
Help to organize the installation in your city. Due to the location of our project in Odesa, we are not always able to remotely coordinate installation preparation and communication with contractors (alarms, signage, window structures...). Therefore, we are looking for those who, with our help and support, will help us and be our eyes and hands on the ground. The costs, of course, we take on ourselves, or rather on ourselves and those who support us - simple Ukrainians who do not care!
Financial help, without which we would not have installed a single LIFE WINDOW! Therefore, if you are willing to support us and pay for the installation of one window in its entirety or help us partially, any help is welcome. That is how we have already installed one window of life in Rozdilna, three windows of life in Odessa and refurbished another one in Odesa.
Also, financial help is needed to print newsletters, which we want to distribute in disadvantaged areas where windows of life have already been installed. It is important that someone who may commit an atrocity tomorrow (God forbid) learn today about something that will stop him - learn about the LIFE WINDOW.
Help with publicity and volunteering, without which, even with publicity spots and printing, we will not reach those who need to know about the existence of windows of life! If you can help us with information, we will provide you with prints and, if necessary, commercials.
The help of the neighborhood police and patrol police. If we can get through to the Ministry of the Interior, we can save many more lives with the help of the police (in informing at-risk groups)!
Technically the LIFE WINDOW consists of
- BOX is made of window fittings with an opening to the outside and inside of the healthcare facility (the window to the outside is installed without a lock, the window to the healthcare facility has a lock, there is no through passage into the facility). The box is large enough to accommodate an infant, but prevents an adult from entering the facility.
- PANDUS if the window is high off the pavement
- PROFESSIONAL SIREN with a delayed siren (most often from thirty seconds to a minute) and not in the area of the box (so as not to frighten the person in shock), but in the area of the medical staff of the facility, warning the medical staff that a child may have been left in the box)
- ADVERTISING (illuminated) is placed above the window and describes the window of life mechanism and its purpose
- IMPORTANT: the window should be placed in a place that is not too crowded and lighted and not subject to video surveillance; both the window and the box are covered with a transparent matte film so as not to frighten the person bringing in the baby if there are medical staff in the room behind the window at that moment!
If a child has been abandoned, the staff of the care center will collect the child, carry out an appropriate medical examination and call the police to register the child and hand him/her over to the social services according to the rules of Ukrainian law.
The person who abandoned the child is not legally prosecuted or criminally liable!
